- 영화사가인 고 이영일 선생은 한국전쟁, 우리 식으로 말해서 6·25사변이 한국 현대사에서 가장 중요한 사건이라고 말한 바 있다. 지표면의 모든 것이 깡그리 무너져서 새롭게 세워져야 했기 때문이라는 것이다. 그 말을 듣고 상상해본 이미지는 정말 놀랄 만했다.<태극기 휘날리며>를 보고 나서 선생의 말이 다시 떠올랐다. 그때 무너진 “지표면의 모든 것”이란 산야와 도시와 건축물만이 아니었다. 우리 몸의 피와 살, 인간 정신을 유지시키는 정서와 믿음 체계, 삶의 기반으로서의 가족, 대의명분으로서의 국가 윤리, 이 모든 실존의 기반이 산산이 흩어졌던 듯하다. 한국의 근대는 혹시 전쟁으로부터 시작된 것이 아닐까. 두려움과 증오, 죄의식과 그리움으로 뒤범벅된 남한과 북한의 괴물스러운 집단의식에 마음을 열고 접근할 수 있는 심리적인 기반을 영화로부터 선물받은 느낌이다.남동철 기자의 지적대로 <태극기 휘날리며>는 스펙터클과 가족멜로라는 장치를 대담하고 효과적으로 구사하면서 시 <태극기 휘날리며>의 신파
