외국에서 본 한국영화, 그것이 알고 싶다
해외에서 바라본 한국영화는 어떤 모습일까. 올해 부산영화제를 찾은 이들 중‘한국통’이라 불리는 3명의 평론가 및 기자에게 영화제에서 상영됐던 한국영화에 대한 코멘트를 부탁했다. <버라이어티>의 데릭 엘리는 “이정철 감독의 <가족>과 배창호 감독의 <길>이 포함되지 않았다”는 점에 아쉬움을 표하면서 대사와 배우들을 보는 재미가 있는 <범죄의 재구성>과 “마음을 끌어당기는 전도연의 연기”가 돋보이는 <인어공주>를 특별언급했다. 토니 레인즈는 “티켓을 구하지 못해 독립영화들을 보지 못했다”면서 “최근에 본 황철민 감독의 <프락치>가 누락된 것을 이해할 수 없다”고 말했다. 한편, 달시 파켓은 재능있는 젊은 감독들의 부상이 눈에 띈다고 강조했다. 참고로 3인의 답변 중 국내에 해외 평이 빈번히 소개됐던 <올드 보이><사마리아><남자는 여자의 미래다><하류인생> 등에 대한 코멘트는 지면 사정상 제외했다.

<여자, 정혜> 온화하게 매혹적인 영화로, 하고자 나선 것을 더도 덜도 아니고 정확하게 완성시키는 - 특히 데뷔작에서 - 보기 드문 일을 성취한다. 관객을 홀리는 듯한 김지수의 연기가 결합되기도. 오해하기 쉬운 어리석은 영어 제목이 안타깝다.
<귀여워> 아직 조금 긴데다 마찬가지로 오해를 불러일으킬 수 있는 영어 제목의 부담이 얹혔지만, 그래도 올해 최고의 - 장진 감독의 <아는 여자>보다 약간 앞선 - 엉뚱 코미디. 정재영이 주연인 빼어난 캐스트도 돋보임.

<빈집> <야생동물 보호구역> 이후 김기덕 감독 최고의 작품인 만큼 다수의 아이디어와 이미지가 차이 밍량의 <애정만세>에서 나온 것이라 안타깝다.
<쓰리-몬스터> 박찬욱 감독 편은 흥미로운 의문을 제기한다. ‘그가 제일 미워하는 것은 관객인가, 영화인가, 부르주아인가 아니면 자기 자신인가?’
<귀여워> 호감이 가는 어수선한 영화. 장선우 감독이 자신을 패러디하는 역에 캐스팅된 것은 번쩍이는 아이디어였다. 김수현 감독이 더 많은 것을 맡겼더라면 하는 생각이 든다.
달시 파켓 (<스크린 인터내셔널> 특파원)
<여자, 정혜> 여주인공이 야채 씻는 장면만 보고 있어도 관람자의 주의를 사로잡는 조용한 작품. 김지수의 환상적 연기는 영화가 끝난 오랜 후에도 머릿속에 생생하게 남는다. 끝 쪽으로 가서 숨은 사실을 드러내는 플래시백이 어쩌면 필요가 없을 정도일 지도.
<신성일의 행방불명> 시작 부분도 훌륭하고, 아마 우수한 단편영화가 됐을 지도 모르지만, 장편 길이를 만들고자 하는 시도에 너무 얇고 길게 잡아 늘인 것 같은 감이 든다. 이 감독도 계속 지켜볼 만할 것이다.
<알 포인트> 분위기 연출과 연기가 잘된 영화. 지루한 ‘긴 검은 머리 소녀’ 부속 장르의 공포영화로부터의 반가운 탈피. 두 번씩 볼만하기까지.
Foreign Critics Say about Korean Film

Derek Elley (<Variety> Senior international film critic)
The simplest of ideas, the purest of love stories, realized with elegance, wit and - finally - great tenderness.
<THIS CHARMING GIRL> A gently seductive movie that accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do and no more - a rare thing, especially in a first film - and held together by a mesmerizing performance from actress Kim Ji-su. A shame about the silly, misleading English title.
<SO CUTE>It's still a little too long, and also saddled with a misleading English title, but this is still the best offbeat comedy of the year - just ahead of Jang Jin's "Someone Special" - with a terrific cast led by Jeong Jae-yeong.

Kim's best film since <WILD ANIMALS>, so it's a pity that so many of the ideas and images are stolen from Tsai Ming-Liang's VIVE L'AMOUR.
<THREE - MONSTER> Park Chan-Wook's episode raises an interesting question: which does he hate most, the audience, cinema, the bourgeoisie or himself?
<SO CUTE>A likeable mess of a film. It was brilliant idea to cast Jang Sun-Woo as a parody of himself, and I wish Kim Soo-Hyun had given him more to do.

<My Generation> This is a director with a lot of talent, but whereas his magnificent short films display a unique and distinctive style, My Generation feels like at times it is trying to imitate someone else's style. It is still filled with interesting moments, but I'm more looking forward to his next work.
<This Charming Girl> A soft-spoken work that can capture the viewer's attention, even if you're simply watching the heroine wash vegetables. A fantastic performance by Kim Ji-su that remains vivid in your mind long after the film is over. The revelatory flashback towards the end is probably not even necessary.
<Shin Sung-il Is Missing> A great beginning, and it probably would have made an excellent short film, but one gets the sense that it was stretched out too thin in an attempt to make it feature length. Again, a talented director that will be worth keeping an eye on.
<R-Point> Atmospheric and well-acted, and a welcome change from the now tiresome girls-with-long-black-hair subgenre of horror films. Worth going back to for a second viewing.
