2005 부산국제영화제의 부대행사로 열린 <러브토크> 출연진과 감독의 오픈토크

‘Glitz’라는 영단어는 “가식적인 과시, 현란함”이라는 뜻으로 정의되며, “반짝임”이라는 뜻을 지닌 독일어에서 왔다. ‘Glamour’란 단어는 “마법 주술”이라는 뜻을 지닌 스코틀랜드 고어에서 왔으며 “거부할 수 없는 매력, 낭만, 흥분의 분위기. 특히 현혹시켜 유혹할 때”라고 정의된다(한편 콩글리시에서의 ‘glamour’는 다른 뜻을 갖게 된 것 같다).

지난 세기 이 두 단어는 칸이나 오스카상 시상식 같은 영화업계의 가장 유명한 행사들, 그리고 그 행사의 대스타들을 둘러싸고 작열하는 흥분과 거의 동의어가 되어왔다. 비록 현재 할리우드의 매혹의 기계가 1930년대나 40년대 그랬던 것만큼 효력을 갖지는 못하지만, 여전히 전세계적으로 일반 관객의 관심과 상상력을 사로잡는 데 성공하고 있다. 물론 스타와 행사 자체에서 자연스럽게 발산되는 것처럼 보이는 것도 실제로는 어마어마한 노동의 생산물이다. 헤어 스타일리스트, 메이크업 아티스트, 패션 디자이너, 마케팅 담당, 출판인, 저널리스트, 조명전문가, 촬영기사, 사진가들 모두는 우리의 관심을 영화와 스타들에 돌리게 하는 별세계의 광휘를 창조하기 위해 장시간 일한다.

본질적으로는 무형의 일시적인 것에 너무나 많은 자원과 시간을 들인다는 것이 실용적으로 사고하는 사람들이 봤을 때 어마어마한 낭비로 보일 수 있을 것이다. 어떤 배우가 칸 레드 카펫을 걸을 때 특별히 매력적으로 보이는 것에 누가 그렇게 신경쓰겠는가? 그렇다고 세계가 더 좋은 곳으로 변하나? 그러나 그 현란함이 우리가 우리의 인생과 사회를 생각하는 방식에 영향을 끼칠 수 있다는 것을 부인하기는 어렵다. 1950년대 제임스 딘이나 마릴린 먼로의 아이코닉한 이미지는 여러 면에서 그 시절에 대변혁을 만들어냈고, 현재 그 역사 속의 시대에 대한 우리의 인지에 영향을 끼친다. 오늘날의 스타들에 대한 영화 팬의 열정을 단순한 숭배행위로도 볼 수 있지만, 다른 측면에서 사람들은 그들이 좋아하는 특정인물을 통해 자신들의 개성을 표출하기도 한다. 한 스타의 공적 이미지와 자세는 사회, 권위, 섹슈얼리티, 젊은 층이 모방하는 라이프 스타일 등에 어떤 사고방식이나 견해를 대변할 수 있다. 심지어 기성 세대가 이런 것을 못마땅해 하더라도, 그런 모방은 사회 관습 변화의 씨를 품고 있을 수 있다.

현란함은 팬과 영화스타 혹은 그 나라의 영화 사이의 결속을 견고하게 하는 데 도움을 준다. 한국에서는 대종상 같은 국내 수상식은 관객에게 특정 이미지를 투사하려는 스타와 패션 디자이너를 위해 쇼케이스를 제공한다. 비록 한국 수상식의 절대량이 워낙 많아서 그 효과가 다소 약화되긴 하지만 말이다. 최근 VIP 기자 시사회는, 아직 할리우드에서 하는 영화 프리미어들과 같은 식으로 홍보에 활용되지는 않지만 과거보다 좀더 화려하고 떠들썩한 모습을 보여주게 됐다. 또한, 각광받는 부산국제영화제는 스타들이 개막식 레드 카펫을 밟고 관중 한가운데를 걸을 때나 더 친밀한 ‘오픈 토크’ 같은 기회를 제공하면서 화려하고 현란한 행사들의 무대가 돼주고 있다.

그러나 그 지역의 스타들을 대등한 입장에서 전시할 수 있는 유럽영화 수상식(European Film Awards)과 같이 아시아 전역을 진정 아우르는 수상식이 없다는 것이 아쉽다. 비록 이런 역할을 채워줄 명목으로 아시아태평양영화제(Asia Pacific Film Festival)가 있긴 하지만 신용이 떨어지는데다가 매년 관심을 끌지 못하고 있다. 아시아는 각국의 독자적인 스타 시스템을 양성하는 데 유럽보다 더 많은 성공을 거두어온 만큼 이런 스타들이 거부할 수 없는 매력을 빛낼 수 있는 지역 행사를 갖는 것도 의미있다고 본다.

In praise of glitz

The English word glitz is defined as "ostentatious showiness; flashiness", and is derived from a German word meaning "glitter". The word glamour comes from an old Scottish word meaning "magic spell," and is defined as "an air of compelling charm, romance, and excitement, especially when delusively alluring." (The Konglish word 'glamour,' on the other hand, seems to have picked up a different meaning).

In the past century both words have become almost synonymous with the glow that surrounds the film industry's most famous events, such as Cannes or the Oscars, and its biggest stars. Although Hollywood's current glitz machine seems far less effective than it was in the 1930s or 40s, it still succeeds in capturing the attention and imagination of ordinary viewers throughout the world. Of course, what is made to seem like a natural emanation from the stars and events themselves is actually the product of vast amounts of labor. Hair stylists, makeup artists, fashion designers, marketing executives, publishers, journalists, lighting specialists, cinematographers, and photographers all work long hours to create this sheen of other-worldliness that attracts us to film and its stars.

It may strike some practical-minded people as a colossal waste to devote so much time and resources to what is essentially an immaterial, transient thing. Who cares if an actor looks particularly attractive when walking up the red carpet at Cannes? Will it make the world a better place? Yet it's hard to deny that glitz can affect the way we think of our lives and society. The iconic images of James Dean or Marilyn Monroe from the 1950s were in some ways revolutionary in their day, and now they color our perceptions of that era in history. Film fans' attachments to the stars of today can be seen as a simple act of admiration, but in another sense people express their individuality through the particular figures they choose to admire. A star's public image and attitude can come to represent a certain attitude or outlook towards society, authority, sexuality, or lifestyle that young people emulate. Even if older generations may frown upon it, such emulation may contain the seeds of societal change.

Glitz helps to cement the bond between a fan and a film star or a national cinema. In Korea, local awards ceremonies such as the Grand Bell Awards provide a showcase for stars and fashion designers to project a certain image to audiences, although the large number of awards ceremonies in Korea somewhat dilutes their effect. Recently, VIP press screenings have come to contain a bit more razzle-dazzle than in the past, although film premieres are still not used for promotion in the same way that they are in Hollywood. Finally, the attention received by the Pusan International Film Festival has provided a stage for glitzy events like the opening ceremony, when stars walk the raised red platform through the center of the crowd, or more intimate star showcases like the Open Talk series.

It's a shame, however, that there isn't a true Asia-wide awards ceremony such as the European Film Awards to showcase the region's stars on an equal footing. Although there is an Asia Pacific Film Festival which is supposed to fulfill this role, it holds little credibility and draws almost no attention each year. Asia has been more successful than Europe in nurturing its own separate star systems, so it would be appropriate to have a regional event where these stars could be showcased in all their glamour.
