인류는 기억상실증에 걸려 있다
-3부작으로 구성된 방대한 만화 <니코폴>을 스크린에 옮기는 것이 쉽지 않았을텐데.
=불가능해 보여서 더욱 도전을 결심하게 되었다. 원작을 전혀 직접적으로 참고하지 않은채 3부작 만화에 대한 기억과 느낌만을 토대로 작업했다. 다행히 프랑스에서는 100만 관객을 동원했고, 비평적인 성과도 좋았다.
-헐리우드에 뒤지지 않는 특수효과가 매우 인상적이다(여배우 샬롯 램플링(<스위밍 풀>)등 3명의 주인공을 제외한 모든 조연은 CG로 만들어진 캐릭터다).
=모두 프랑스 기술로 만들어진 것이다. 사실 영화속 CG 캐릭터들의 퀄러티에 대해서는 만족하기가 힘들다. 인간 배우를 CG 캐릭터로 완벽하게 대체할 수는 없다는 것을 배웠다.
-당신의 만화와 <우먼트랩>에는 정치적이고 논쟁적인 시각들이 존재한다. 당신이 구(舊)유고 출신이라는 것에서 기인하는 것인가
=그렇다. 전쟁과 혼란으로 가득찬 인위적인 국가 유고에서 태어난 것이 결정적인 역할을 했다. 하지만 출신과는 상관없이, 정치적인 색깔을 배제한 작품이라도 지정학적인 메세지를 전달할 필요는 있다고 생각한다.
-<우먼트랩>에서는 ’기억’이 중요한 모티브다. 여주인공 질은 지난 기억을 제거시키는 파란색 알약을 계속해서 삼킨다.
=오늘날 세계를 보고 있노라면 ’기억의 나약함’이 느껴진다. 홀로코스트나 수많은 학살들은 지금도 계속해서 반복되고 있다. 인류는 기억을 할 줄 모르는 종족이거나, 기억을 하고 싶어하지 않는 종족이라는 것을 말하고 싶다.
-대자본으로 영화를 만들기 위해 예술가로서 일정정도 타협해야만 했던 것들도 있나
=처음에 영화를 만들고자 했을때 제작자에게 이 작품이 미국식 블록버스터가 아닌 유럽식 작가주의 영화라는 점을 분명히 했었다. 물론 영화를 위해 새로운 요소들을 첨가했다. 하지만 원작의 맥락은 사라지지 않고 잘 전달이 되었다고 믿는다.
-앞으로의 계획은
=지금까지와는 전혀 다른 종류의 4번째 영화를 작업할 게획이다. 만약 원작만화 <니코폴>을 읽은 사람이라면 파란 알약을 먹고 다 잊어버리라. 그런후에 <우먼트랩>을 보도록!(웃음)

Enki Bilal, director of is very well known European cartoonist. describes the adventure of Nikopol, the political prisoner, Horun, the falcon-headed god and blue haired Jill Bioshkop. It brought much attention among those few mania as soon as it came out on screen in Korea. On Oct. 8, and played at the Haeundae Yachting Center Outdoor Theater were the masterpieces in science fictions.
-It doesn't seem easy to move the large scaled animation on the screen.
=That it seemed impossible actually made me to do it. I didn't consider the original film, but I did work based on my feeling and memory of three parts. Surprisingly, there were one million audiences watched this film with good comments as well.
- The special effects were very impressed. (Except for Charlotte Rampling of and other three starrings, all supporting actors were made by the computer graphic work.)
=all were done by the France techniques. In fact, it is hard to be satisfied with the quality of the CG characters in the film. I realized that these CG characters can't be substituted for human actors and actresses.
-I see the political and argumative perspectives in your film and animation . Is that because you are from Czech?
=right. the reason I were born in Czech where was in war affected me the most. However, I think that it is necessary to deliver the geopolitical message.
-'Memory' is the important motivein . In the film, Jill tried to remove her old memory by swallowing the blue pills.
=I feel weak as I view today's world. I want to emphasize that people can be either who can't remember or who don't want to remember.
-Have you as an artist, ever been affected by money to make a film?
=First of all, I pointed out clearly to the production company that I want to make the European writer focused film not the American Blockbuster movie. I, of course, added new things this time in the film. However, the original plot was still well delivered in it.
-your future plan?
=The 4th film would be totally different from the past. For those of who have read the original , eat the blue pills to erase everything on you head first. Then, watch !
