The midnight screenings at PiFan have long been among my favorite part of each year’s festival. Judging by the great attendance those shows get every year, I am not alone. Each year, the midnight movies are among the first to sell out, as young people with sleep disorders from all over Bucheon, Seoul and beyond vie for the opportunity to watch movies until dawn.

Among the many programs I have seen over the years, I think the most memorable for me was the night of Peter Jackson films. That was back before anyone had heard of <Lord of the Rings>, so I was quite surprised to see how many people had heard of the strange New Zealander’s movies. But a quick look through just about any video store in Korea could turn up an old, battered copy of <Bad Taste> and some even would have <Dead Alive> albeit in a version so censored you could barely follow the grizzly story.

That night, several hundred of us crammed into Boksagol Cultural Center to see <Meet the Feebles> <Bad Taste> <Forgotten Silver> and <Dead Alive>(all censor-free). I think I was most impressed by people’s reaction to <Meet the Feebles> especially considering how few people in Korea know of <The Muppet Show> the 1970s program that inspired Jackson’s perverted puppet show.

Instead of a nice little program about dancing and singing frogs, pigs and chickens, like the Muppets, “Feebles” presents a non-stop barrage of depravities - porn, disease, cruelty and violence (and, since this is Peter Jackson, a soppy love story, too). With each gross-out scene, the PiFan audience would squeal with disgust and laughter. Just when you think it cannot get any worse, it always does.

While the midnight shows always leave plenty of people succumbing to sleep, as the need for sleep slowly overcomes the discomfort of the lumpy seats, I think the Jackson night ended up with the fewest sleepers at the end of any all-night show I have ever attended. In any event, for those who make it through the long night, there is that special, shell-shock-like bond.

There are still midnight screenings this year being held Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Even if tickets are sold out on the Internet, PiFan organizers always hold a block of tickets for same-day purchasing. If you line up early at a ticket booth, you might be able to score some seats.

피판(PiFan)의 심야상영은 영화제에서 가장 좋아하는 부분이다. 매년 높은 관객점유율을 자랑하는 것을 보면 나 혼자만 이렇게 느끼는 건 아닌가보다. 매년 캄캄한 한밤중에 열리는 심야영화는 가장 먼저 매진되고, 부천과 서울 등 전국 곳곳에서 온 젊은 관객은 새벽녘까지 영화를 볼 수 있는 기회를 놓치지 않는다.

지난 몇년 동안 본 심야 프로그램들 중에서 가장 기억에 남는 것은 제6회 부천영화제에서 열렸던 ‘피터 잭슨의 밤’이다. 당시는 <반지의 제왕>을 사람들이 잘 모르던 때였다. 그래서 나는 생소한 뉴질랜드 남자의 영화를 수많은 사람들이 알고 있다는 사실에 적잖이 놀랐다. 하지만 대부분의 한국 비디오가게들은 오래되고 낡은 곽에 들어 있는 <고무인간의 최후>(Bad Taste)와 스토리를 이해할 수 없을 만큼 심하게 잘려나간 <데드 얼라이브>까지도 갖추고 있다.

그날 밤, 나를 포함한 수백명의 관객은 복사골 문화센터에 (검열을 거치지 않은) <피블스를 만나요> <고무인간의 최후> <포가튼 실버> <데드 얼라이브>를 보러 밀려 들어갔다. 가장 놀라웠던 사실은 (한국에는 잘 알려져 있지 않은 1970년대 프로그램) <더 머펫 쇼>에서 영감을 받은 잭슨의 변태적인 꼭두각시 쇼 <피블스를 만나요>를 향한 객석의 뜨거운 반응이었다.

춤추고 노래하는 개구리, 돼지와 닭들이 출연하는 귀여운 <더 머펫 쇼>와 달리, <피블스를 만나요>는 포르노, 전염병, 잔혹함과 폭력으로 구성된 끊임없는 퇴폐의 연발 사격이다(그리고 피터 잭슨의 영화이기 때문에 감상적인 러브 스토리도 있다). 구역질 나는 장면이 하나하나 나올 때마다 피판의 관객은 혐오감과 재미를 담은 비명을 크게 내지르곤 했다. 이보다 심하게 구역질 날 수 없을 거라고 생각하는 장면에서도, 강도는 점점 더 심해졌으니까.

울퉁불퉁해서 불편한 자리에 앉더라도 잠이 결국 오는 법. 심야상영은 꽤 많은 사람들을 수면상태로 몰고 가지만, ‘피터 잭슨의 밤’은 내가 참석한 심야상영 중에서 가장 적은 사람들이 잠에 곯아떨어졌던 것 같다. 그 긴 밤을 견뎌내는 사람들 사이에는 정말로 특별하고도 단단한 연대감이 생긴다.

올해에도 어김없이 월요일, 화요일, 수요일 밤마다 심야상영이 열리고 있다. 인터넷 예매분이 매진이더라도 항상 일정량의 표가 현장 구매를 위해 준비되어 있다. 티켓부스 앞에서 일찍 줄을 선다면, 당신 역시 표를 구할 수 있을 것이다.
