제6회 전주국제영화제가 5월6일 오후 7시 전북대 문화관에서 폐막식을 하고 8박9일에 걸친 여정을 마감한다. 영화배우 공형진과 윤지혜가 사회를 맡는 오늘 폐막식에는 영화제 홍보대사 김동완과 폐막작인 <남극일기>의 제작자 차승재 대표, 임필성 감독, 주연배우 송강호와 유지태 등이 참석해서 축제를 마감하는 자리에 함께할 예정이다. 폐막식이 끝난 뒤에는 남극을 배경으로 한 스릴러 <남극일기>가 국내 최초로 상영된다.
올해 전주국제영화제는 한산했던 예년과 달리 높은 예매율과 좌석점유율을 보였고, 마술과 콘서트, 마임 등 다양한 공연을 준비해 축제의 분위기를 더했다. 영화제측이 중간집계한 예매율은 60%고 좌석점유율은 74%. 가장 높은 호응을 얻은 프로그램은 디지털 독립장편의 약진이 두드러졌던 ‘한국영화의 흐름’과 세번에 걸친 심야상영, 일본 독립영화의 거장인 ‘소마이 신지 회고전’ 등이었다. 시민들과의 친밀도를 높이겠다는 영화제의 의지에 응답하듯 비교적 대중성이 강한 ‘시네마스케이프’와 ‘영화궁전’도 매표율이 높았다. 그러나 실험영화작가인 피터 쿠벨카의 강연도 매진을 기록해 디지털과 대안영화를 밑바탕으로 삼은 영화제 성격에 걸맞는 성공을 거두었다.
상영관이 고사동 ‘영화의 거리’에 집중되면서 영화제의 공간적인 집중성도 강화됐다. 올해 처음 시도된 ‘JIFF FESCADE’에서 밤마다 열린 콘서트, 메가박스 앞과 거리에서 벌어진 ‘산발공연’, 전주시가 준비한 빛과 영상의 축제 루미나리에는 축제다운 분위기를 조성하는데 큰역할을 했다. 영화제 프로그램과 학술적인 고찰을 결합한 ‘시네마 클래스’ 역시 전주영화제의 성격과 맞물린 적절한 시도. 이처럼 올해 전주영화제는 전반적으로 호평을 받고 있지만 불안한 시스템과 미숙한 행사진행을 지적하는 비판도 나왔다.
전북대 문화관과 고사동을 연결할 필요가 없어지면서 셔틀버스가 폐지되었는데, 타지역에서 찾아오는 관객을 고려하지 않은 처사라는 불평이 있었고, 극장내 음식물과 카메라 반입 검사가 철저하지 않아 관객들이 불편을 겪기도 했다. 특히 주말에는 거의 모든 영화가 매진되면서 축소된 객석 규모가 두드러졌다. 민병록 집행위원장은 “1500석 규모의 전북대 문화관이 상영관에서 빠지면서 객석이 크게 줄었지만, 규모를 확대하는게 약간은 두려웠다. 내년엔 상영관을 늘리고 전주시와 함께 ‘영화의 거리’를 아름답게 꾸며 시민들의 참여를 끌어낼 것”이라고 밝혔다. 제자리를 잡아가는 전주영화제는 내년이 더욱 기대되는 발전을 보이고 있다.
“See You Again”
The 6th JIFF’s closing ceremony will be held at the CBNU Cultural Center at 7 O’clock on May 6 and the journey for 9 days and 8 nights will be ended. At the closing ceremony led by the Korean film star, Gong Hyoung-jin and Yoon Ji-hye, many Korean film stars and directors will participate: Festival spokesperson Kim Dong-wan, the producer of Antarctic Diary, which is a closing film, Cha Seung-jae, the director, Yim Phil-sung and the main actors, Song Kang-ho and Yoo Ji-tae.
This year’s JIFF recorded high rate of advanced ticket purchase and occupied seat and various performances such as magic concert and mime made the festival more energetic and vivid. The sections, which received the most enthusiastic responses, were ‘Korean Cinema on the Move’ that the emergence of digital independent features was distinguished and three times midnight screening and ‘Retrospective: Shinji SOMAI.’
With shifting main theaters to Gosa Dong ‘Cinema District,’ spatial centralization gets better. ‘Cinema Class’, the combination of festival program and academic study was also a proper experiment engaged with JIFF’s characteristic. There were some comments indicating the lack of theater seat and inexperience in directing events, though. About these comments, festival director, Min Byoung-rok said, “We were afraid of the rapid enlargement of festival scale. In the next year, however, we’ll have more theaters, beautifully decorate the ‘Cinema District’ and bring out Jeonju citizens’ voluntary participation.”
