"다 잘 살아보자는 웰빙 영화라니까"

<성냥팔이 소녀의 재림>(2002) 이후 장선우 감독은 영화를 그만 두겠다는 생각을 수백번 했다. 흥행 참패와 평단의 외면 때문은 아니었다. “10년을 돌아보니 하고 싶은 영화 많이 했구나, 이제 그만 해도 되겠구나 싶었거든.” 그냥 빈둥댈까, 귀농할까, 그것도 아니면 입산할까. 행로를 찾아 헤매고 있었던 장 감독을 지인들과 후배들이 가만뒀을리 없다. 시집 <이별에 대하여> 출간과 영화 <귀여워> 출연은 그렇게 이뤄졌다. 그렇다면 이번에 그가 부산을 찾은 이유는. 혹시 <귀여워>의 배우로 관객과의 대화에 참여하기 위해서? 아니다. 그가 부산에서 꺼내든 것은 몽고의 마두금 전설을 바탕으로 한 신작 <천개의 고원>(가제)이었다. PPP에 선정된 <천 개의 고원>을 두고 그는 “아직도 하고 싶은 이야기가 남았나 봐. 다시 돌아온 걸 보면”이라며 웃었다.

-<천 개의 고원>은 몽고의 마두금(馬頭琴) 전설에서부터 출발한 영화라고 들었다.

=작년에 몽고에 간 적 있는데 초원에서 말타고 한없이 놀고 싶더라. 말타고 달리던 유목민의 DNA가 되살아났는지 몰라. 그 쾌감이 좋아서 하루에 8시간씩 말타고 그랬다. 그러다 농으로 여기서 영화했으면 좋겠다고 했더니, 동행했던 누군가가 마두금에 관한 전설을 이야기해 주더라.

-마두금(馬頭琴) 전설을 좀 알려달라.

=전해 내려 오는 버전이 17개 쯤 된다. 내가 들었던 건 서로 극진히 아끼고 따르는 소년과 말에 관한 것이었다. 전쟁에 징발된 말이 화살을 맞고 죽게 되자, 상심한 소년은 죽은 말의 가죽을 벗겨 통을 만들고 말의 머리뼈로 장식한 마두금을 만들어 떠돌이 연주자가 된다는, 그러자 세상에 평화가 깃든다는 일종의 러브스토리였다.

-애초 제목이기도 했던 ‘마두금’은 어떤 악기인가.

=2현 악기인데 몽고에선 ‘모린 호르’라고 부른다. 그곳 사람들은 마두금이 마음을 달래주는 치유의 능력을 갖고 있다고 믿는다.

-말과의 사랑에서 에로스가 느껴진다.

=말은 소년의 죽은 엄마라고 보면 된다. 소년은 엄마에 대한 그리움에서 벗어나지 못하고 그만큼 말에 대해 애정을 쏟는다. 그러다 말이 죽고 나서 집착을 버릴 수 있게 된다. 마두금을 연주하면서.

-매번 새로운 걸 하고 싶어하는데. 이번엔 어떤 실험이 뒤따를까.

=애들이 엄마 손잡고 볼 수 있는 영화를 만들려고 한다(웃음). 나야 한번도 그런 영화를 한적 없으니까 나한테는 모험 아닌가.

-굳이 1800년 전으로 돌아가서 낯선 유목민의 이야기를 하려는 의도가 뭔가.

=쉽게 말하면 ‘잘 살아보자’ 캠페인 같은 거다. 집착 버리고 욕망 지우고 웰빙하자는 거지. 끊임없이 욕망을 부추기는 자본주의에 끌려가지 않고 버티면서 대안적인 행복이 뭔지 찾아보고 싶다. 문명 이전의 유목민들의 삶에서.

-프로젝트는 얼마나 진행됐나.

=아직 최종 시나리오가 안 나왔다. 고고학자 출신의 현지 로케이션 매니저인 오키르와 전쟁 일부 장면을 연출할 몽고의 국민감독 발 딘 얌 감독 등과 함께 프리 프로덕션을 하고 있다.

Jang Sun-Woo, preproducing his next film

Director Jang Sun-Woo thought more than 100 times about his career after directing the film <Resurrection of The Little Match Girl> It wasn't because his film was not appealed to the audiences, and critics. "As I have made many films, and I thought I could end up my career here." Just hanging around, returning back to the normal life. or going to the mountain, looking for new path of life, his friends and film staffs didn't leave director Jang alone. He published a collection of poems and appeared on the film <So Cute>. Then, the reason of his visiting PIFF this time is to participate in the open talk with audiences? Not really. He came to PIFF to show his new film <A Thousand Plateaus>. He laughed and said, "I still seem to have things to say."

-I heard the film <A Thousand of Plateaus> was based on the legend of Madugeum in Mongolia.

=I visited Mongolia last year, and I wished to ride a horse there forever. I really liked that feeling and I spent a time just riding the horse for 8 hours in one day. And I could hear the legend of Madugeum from my friend.

-Tell us about the legend of Madugeum.

=There are 17 versions of Madugeum. The one that I heard was about a boy with a horse. After the death of the horse, the boy takes off its skin and decorates with its bones to make the Madugeum. He finally becomes the player of Madugeum, It is a kind of a love story.

-I feel the love between the boy and the horse.

=The horse can be the boy's mother. The boy feels an irresistible yearning for his mother. However, after his horse is taken away, he playes the Madugeum. After then, he can stop thinking of his mother..

-You seem to try new things ?

=I want to make a film that children can see with their mother.(laugh) Because I have never made this kind of films, this can be my new adventure.

- What is the actual purpose to tell us story about nomads in 1800 years ago.

=This can be the campaign of well being. I want to stay out of the endless desire in the capitalism and find the real happiness from those nomads' lives.

- The progress of this project.

=The final scenario is not finshied yet. I am doing the production with an archeologist, an actual location manager and Mongolian director who has presented the part of war scenes.
