For international guests, one of the most striking aspects of PiFan (indeed, like all film festivals in Korea) is the ubiquitous presence of T-shirted volunteers. I have been to film fests all over Asia and elsewhere, and while many of them are quite good, I have never seen anywhere that has the kind of enthusiastic and omnipresent army of helpers like PiFan. They are everywhere ? at the theaters, the ticketing booths, the hotels where the guests are staying, in the buses and at the bus stops.

So who are these volunteers? Well, they are obviously a diverse bunch. There are 258 of them this year, ranging from high school age (there are four of them) to 50 years old. But by far the majority are university students. And if the volunteers seem to be overwhelmingly female, it is because they are. A solid 80% of the volunteers are women.

Over 1,400 people applied for the positions this year, filling out applications and making the competition for the unpaid positions surprisingly tough. I guess that’s the kind of movie fans you get in Korea.

They come from all over, not just Bucheon. Kim Min-sun, for example, comes all the way from northeast Seoul, a good hour commute away. Others come from Incheon and just as far.

At the hotels especially you find volunteers with a lot of language skills. Most common is English and Japanese, but there are volunteers who know Chinese, Spanish and more. They help out filmmakers, actors, producers and other guests from all over the world, helping them find the movie theaters, somewhere to eat, where their appointments are or whatever needs to be done.

Many of the volunteers chosen for their language skills have lived abroad, but not all of them. Lee Su-ji learned much of her Japanese from television dramas, to which she seems rather addicted.

For many of them, the day is long and tiring. Many are too busy to watch any movies, which some say they find a little disappointing.

“My friend was a volunteer last year and said it was fun, so I applied this year,” said Lee Jae-won, a university student. “It has been fun, but I wish I had the chance to see some movies.”

By the way, that 50-year-old volunteer I mentioned earlier is Kim Jung-hee. She is an English teacher, but she takes time out of her vacation schedule to help out at PiFan each year. In fact, she has been volunteering at PiFan since the festival’s very first year. A pretty impressive show of dedication.

외국에서 온 방문객들에게 피판의 가장 놀라운 점은, 티셔츠를 입고 있는 자원봉사자들이 어느 곳에나 있다는 사실이다(한국 모든 영화제가 그러하듯이 말이다). 나는 아시아와 다른 대륙을 돌며 많은 영화제를 방문했다. 어디든 다 좋긴 했지만 피판에서처럼 어디에서나 열정적으로 일하는 도우미들을 본 적은 없다. 그들은 극장, 티켓 부스, 방문객들이 묵는 호텔, 버스, 그리고 버스 정류장 등 어디를 가나 있다.

대체 이 자원봉사자들은 누구일까? 그들은 당연하게도 다양한 사람들로 구성되어있다. 올해에는 258명의 자원봉사자들이 있는데, 4명의 고등학생으로부터 50살 성인까지 나이대는 다양하다. 하지만 대부분은 대학생들이다. 그리고 만약에 자원봉사자들 중 여자의 수가 훨씬 많아 보인다면, 그건 실제로도 그렇기 때문이다. 80%의 자원봉사자들이 여성이다.

1400명 이상의 사람들이 자원봉사를 하기 위해 지원서를 작성했고, 무보수임에도 불구하고 자원봉사자로 뽑히기 위한 경쟁은 예상밖으로 치열하기까지 했다. 한국의 영화팬들은 다들 이런가 보다.

그들은 부천뿐만 아니라 전국 곳곳에서 왔다. 예를 들어 김민선 씨는 통근 시간이 1시간은 너끈히 되는 서울의 동북 지역에서 매일 출근한다. 인천이나 더 먼 곳에서 온 봉사자들도 있다.

호텔에서는 외국어 능력을 가진 자원봉사자들이 언제나 대기중이다. 영어와 일본어가 가장 일반적이지만 중국어, 스페인어 등을 하는 자원봉사자도 있다. 그들은 세계 각국에서 온 감독, 배우, 제작자, 그리고 방문객들을 도와준다. 극장이나 식사할 장소, 약속 장소로 안내하는 등 게스트들의 요구를 열심히 들어준다.

자원봉사자들 전부의 경우는 아니지만, 대부분은 해외에서 살았던 경험이 있는 사람들이다. 자원봉사자 이수지씨는 해외유학 경험이 없음에도 불구하고 일본어 TV 드라마를 중독이 될 정도로 자주 보면서 일본어를 배웠다고 한다.

많은 봉사자들의 하루는 길고 피곤하다. 다들 너무 바빠서 영화 볼 시간도 없는 경우가 허다해서 조금 실망이라고 고백하는 봉사자들도 적지 않다.

대학생 봉사자 이재원씨는 "작년에 친구가 영화제에서 재미있게 봉사를 했다는 말에 나도 올해 신청하게 되었다"고 하면서도 "지금까지는 즐거운 경험이었지만, 영화 볼 수 있는 기회가 좀 있었으면 좋겠다"는 말로 솔직한 심정을 드러냈다.

참고로, 위에서 잠시 언급한 50살의 자원봉사자는 영어선생님인 김정희씨다. 피판의 첫회때부터 지금까지 방학을 이용해 지속적으로 봉사를 해오고 계신다. 정말로 대단한 열정과 헌신이다.
