11회 부천국제판타스틱영화제(PiFan)에 온 것을 환영한다. 올해 Pifan 데일리에 글을 싣도록 허락해 주신 부천영화제의 관계자분들과 <씨네21>에 감사드린다. 나는 벌써 몇해째 여러 매체를 통해 한국 영화계와 연예계에 대해서 기고한 바 있다. 지난 2001년의 첫 방문을 계기로 부천영화제는 나에게 특별한 영화제 중 하나로 자리잡았다. 짧지 않은 기간을 통해 이곳에 정을 붙이게 된 셈이다.

부천영화제가 매년 선보이는 예술적인 영화들과 열광적인 ‘배드 테이스트’의 조화는 나의 괴팍한 취향에 잘 부합했다. 나는 추상적이고 실험적인 영화와 삶의 허무함에 대한 느리고 긴 고찰을 다룬 영화를 즐기며 살아간다. 하지만 당신 역시 좀비 양떼, 살인마 까마귀, 그리고 식인연쇄살인마(모두 이번 영화제에 상영될 영화들이다. <블랙 쉽> <새> <그림 러브 스토리>)를 흥겹게 즐길 필요가 있을 게다.

물론, 이런 극단적인 장르 외에도 Pifan은 다양한 영화들을 제공한다. 가족영화나 고전영화 회고전처럼 모든 사람들의 입맛을 충족할 수 있는 영화들도 있다. 부천이라는 도시는 몇년 전 처음 왔을 때와는 많이 달라졌다. 지금 현대백화점, 이마트와 화려한 멀티플렉스들이 서 있는 자리는 거대하고 더러운 구멍들이 숭숭 뚫려 있던 허허벌판이었다. 구(舊)부천의 대부분은 우뚝 솟은 아파트 단지를 세우기 위해 완전히 해체되어 사라졌고, 앞으로도 계속해서 사라져갈 것이다.

그러나 올해 부천영화제를 보며 즐거운 점이라면 기찻길 주변지역으로 대표되는 구(舊)부천의 부활이다. 새롭고 화려한 부천에 문제점이 있다는 것은 아니지만, 개인적으로는 오래된 동네의 덜 포장된 분위기를 선호하는 편이다. 물론 부천영화제가 구(舊)부천의 느낌으로 돌아갈 수 있었던 이유는 기차역 옆에 새로 건설된 멀티플렉스처럼 새로운 개발이 이루어진 덕택이라고 할 수 있다. 옛말처럼 모든 것은 결국 재생하게 마련이다.

새로움과 전통의 퓨전이야말로 부천의 원동력이 아닐까. 부천영화제의 영화들이 새로움과 오래된 것, 예술과 비속함, 번지르르한 화려함과 단순함의 모든 조화를 통해 더욱 빛나는 것처럼 말이다. 그러니, 부천에 온 것을 환영한다. 부천국제판타스틱영화제에서의 열흘을 마음껏 즐기시길.

Welcome to the 11th PiFan! Mark Russell/ Korea correspondent for <The Hollywood Reporter>

Welcome to the 11th Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival. It was very nice of the organizers at PiFan and <Cine 21> to ask me to contribute to this year’s PiFan Dailies. I have been writing about Korean movies and entertainment for a variety of publications for several years now.

PiFan has long been a favorite film festival of mine, since I first attended back in 2001 - not as long as some, perhaps, but long enough that I feel a real connection to here. The balance of artsy films and gloriously bad taste that PiFan offers each year deeply appeals to my own strange tastes. I enjoy non-linear, experimental films and long, slow, painful examinations of the emptiness of life as much as the next perso - but sometimes, you just need to enjoy zombie sheep, killer crows, and cannibal serial killers (all films in this year’s PiFan - Black Sheep, Kaw and Grimm Love).

Of course, PiFan also offers a lot choices beyond just the extreme. There are plenty of family films, retrospectives of older classics, and a bit of everything for everyone. Bucheon has changed a lot since I first traveled here years ago. I can still remember when the Hyundai Department store, E-Mart, and all the new, fancy movie theaters were just empty fields or big, dirty holes in the ground. Much of the old Bucheon has been torn down to make towering apartment towns, and I am sure more will be torn down in the future. But one thing I quite enjoy about this year’s PiFan is seeing it return to the old Bucheon, the areas close to the train tracks. Not that there is anything wrong wit the new, fancy Bucheon, but personally I enjoy the grit and the feel of the older neighborhoods.

Of course, the main reason PiFan could return to the old areas is because of the new developments there, the new movie theaters close to the train station. Everything old is new again, as the saying goes.

I guess it is that fusion of new and old that makes Bucheon work. Just as the fusions of new and old, artistic and vulgar, glossy and simple, make the films of PiFan work. So, thanks for coming. I hope you enjoy your 10 days of fun at PiFan.
