개막식 무대 인사 장면

제6회 전주국제영화제가 4월28일 전북대 문화관에서 열린 개막식을 시작으로 9일에 걸친 축제의 돛을 올렸다. 영화배우 정진영과 장신영의 사회로 진행된 개막식에는 개막작 의 감독인 아핏차퐁 위라세타쿤과 쓰카모토 신야, 송일곤을 비롯해 영화배우 문성근, 이문식, 이영하, 정태우, 정웅인 등이 참석해서 여섯 돌을 맞은 전주영화제를 축하했고, 재즈 보컬리스트 나윤선이 축하의 무대를 선보였다. 김완주 전주영화제 조직위원장은 “가장 한국적인 도시 전주가 제공하는 영화 비빔밥의 맛에 흠뻑 빠지시기를 바랍니다”라는 말로 자유와 독립, 소통을 표방하는 전주영화제의 개막을 선언했다.

올해 전주영화제는 지난해까지 메인 상영관이었던 전북대 문화관을 개·폐막식장으로만 사용하면서 객석수가 4177석에서 2535석으로 크게 줄었다. 상영작 또한 지난해 284편에 비해 176편에 불과하다. 그러나 영화제 출품작은 역대 최고인 565편에 달해 독립영화와 디지털 영화를 소개하는 진취적인 영화제로서의 위상을 증명했다. 영화 한 편을 여러번 상영해서 시민들이 영화에 다가갈 수 있는 기회를 넓혔다는 사실 또한 눈여겨볼만하다. 새로 생긴 메가박스를 중심으로 공간집약도를 높인 전주영화제는 비교적 작은 도시 규모에 어울리는 방식으로 축제의 느낌을 더한 것이다.

전주영화제는 작년부터 인더스트리 스크리닝을 진행하고 여러번의 세미나를 준비하는 등 단순히 영화만 상영하는 영화제를 지양하고자 하면서 지평을 넓혀가고 있다. 민병록 집행위원장은 전주에서 디지털 영화 촬영과 후반작업, 마켓까지 포괄하겠다는 야심찬 청사진을 제시하기도 했다. 벌써 여섯해가 지났지만 전주영화제는 아직도 진행형이다.

Start JIFF

The 6th JIFF has just started with the opening ceremony at the CBNU Cultural Center on April 28. Not only the directors of Digital Short Films by Three Directors, Song Il-gon, Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Shinya Tsukamoto but also the Korean film stars, Lee Mun-sik, Lee Young-ha, Jeong Tae-woo and Jeong Woong-in visit Jeonju to celebrate the opening ceremony.

Shifting main theaters to the Gosa Dong Cinema District, the theater seats of this year’s JIFF are reduced from 4177 to 2535 and the number of screening films from 284 in last year to 176. The entry films are, however, up to 565, the highest number among successive festivals, which demonstrates a position as a progressive festival introducing independent and digital films. It is noteworthy that more than a few showings of a film improve citizen’s accessibility to JIFF films.

Having industry screening and seminars planned from last year, JIFF aims for a film festival more than a festival showing films. The festival director, Min Byoung-rok presents an aspiring project covering from filming and postproduction to market for digital film at Jeonju. JIFF is already the 6th but still progressing.
